Did you know there are two different types of packing peanuts?  The original type is made out of polystyrene.  The more resent type of packing peanut is made out of corn starch, making it easily biodegradable in our environment.  With these two types of peanuts you can investigate some fun science!

Some common hand warmers contain a substance called sodium acetate. When a super saturated solution of sodium acetate crystallizes it releases heat. The crystallization process is very fast and produces crystals that look like ice.

There is a common polymer used in both baby diapers and water crystals found at a garden center. Combine this polymer with water and you have a substance that looks and feels like snow, except it?s not as cold! Now that?s a little science magic!!
