This activity is fun but can be a bit messy.  Mixing a little water with corn starch makes a substance that has properties of both a solid and a liquid.

You will need:

Cornstarch, Water, Measuring utensils, Containers (jars or cups), Food coloring (optional)

Now try this:

  1. Place cornstarch into container.  A few drops of food coloring can also be added.

  1. Add a small amount of water to "wet" the cornstarch.  Mix well.

  1. When the starch is completely "wet", try putting into your hand.  Test your mixture as a solid by forming it into a ball.

  1. Test your mixture as a liquid by pouring it into a container.

Suggestions: For storage, place into a sealed plastic bag.  Do not use near carpet and avoid contact with clothing and hair.  Enjoy your mixture.

What is happening?

This mixture is known as suspension and can behave as both a solid and a liquid substance.  When you squeeze or roll the mixture it behaves as a solid.  When you let the mixture relax it behaves as a liquid.
